Western Park (138) def. Buln (79): Having been dead last on the ladder before Christmas, relying on two sides to lose in the final round of the season to even make the finals, and knocking off the top side in the semi-final, Western Park have claimed a fairytale premiership in Division 3, defeating Buln by 69 runs. It was a win that was a slow grind, with both sides exerting dominance with the ball on occasion, and the conditions ensuring that a tight contest was in order. Having won the toss and batted first on an overcast and damp day, the Warriors made their way to 138 on day one, with a 43-run stand between Rod Breeden (26) and Jack Cusden (19) crucial to the Warriors posting a defendable total. Stephen Briggs (27) threatened at times to take the game away from Buln, but excellent bowling efforts from Mat Gooden (3-38 from 20.2) and James Davidson (3-20 off 9) ensured that the Lyrebirds kept the runs down. Buln’s batting has been a feature all year, and the Lyrebirds would no doubt have been confident of chasing down the runs, but the pressure applied by Western Park was hard to overcome. Mick Talbot (3-18 from 17) and Stephen Briggs (2-26 off 19) were on song with the new ball, and Jack Cusden (3-18 off 8) enjoyed his time in Division 3. From 5-31, James Davidson (11) and Brendon Wilson (22*) battled for a 29-run 6th wicket stand, but Jack Cusden destroyed Davidson’s stumps in the final over before tea to have Buln 6-60. From there, Buln had their backs against the wall, and despite a gallant showing with the bat, were dismissed for 79 to hand Western Park the premiership.
