Swamp Tigers Sunk

Western Park (4-103) def. Iona (70)

An emphatic bowling performance has helped Western Park claim the Division 3 premiership over Iona, with Stephen Briggs and Michael Talbot the stars. Having been sent into the field, the Warriors watched on as Andrew Parker and Michael Neilson made a somewhat surprisingly cautious start for the Swamp Tigers – with the pair adding 22 in the first 10 overs. Talbot and Batson applied constant pressure with the new-ball and made scoring difficult, although they couldn’t make the breakthrough required. With Briggs handed the ball all that changed however. Moving the ball considerably, the all-rounder found the edge of Parker’s bat to remove him for 14, and once the first incision had been made there was little that could stop Western Park. Luke Ferguson could only contribute 16, and Mick Taylor was removed for a second-ball duck as wickets began to fall at a frightening rate. Briggs helped himself to 6-28 from his 15 overs, whilst Talbot chimed in with 3-16 – cleaning up the tail as Iona were bowled out for 70. In reply, Western Park put to rest any thoughts of an Iona comeback with a 33-run opening stand – although Ferguson was able to remove both openers early in his spell. However, Kristian Thompson (24) and Travis Maher (27) were untroubled as they carried Western Park through to victory on the first day.
